I have made a rough version of a rebuilt 3do, with no crossing polygons.  That means that there are more polygons, overall.

The 3dp is now something like 36kb, a huge increase.  But the 3do is down to about 45kb, which is pretty good.  There are one or 2 changes I want to make, but that's an improvement.

Would there be any difference between one polygon that crosses another, and splitting a polygon into two -- one on either side?

There's a lot of polygon crossing in this stand. I could build it with polygons that don't cross, but worry that it might end up being almost as large.

The grandstand is a repeating structure, 10 identical sections (well, nearly identical.) A 3do of just the first section is 5.69kb; so 10 of those would be the same size as my 3do now... the middle 8 sections would be a little bit smaller, so it might not be 10x as large, but it would get pretty close. I'll experiment a little.

Yes, especially as easy as Irfanview is, definitely not worth going into the hex code to save a step.

You're right, Irfanview would be simpler than going through winmip.

What photoshop settings do I need to use for the BMP saving?

I have had that error even with properly sized textures, when trying to add them to 123do.

I still don't know the source of the problem, but here is my workaround:

saving them as mips in winmip, then converting the mip back to a bmp... and it loads fine.
